When’s the last time you watched kids on a merry go round?
Or listened to the rain as it tickled the ground?
Have you followed a butterfly’s erratic flight,
Stood and gazed at the sun as it faded tonight?

You had better slow down …
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short …
The music won’t last.

Do you rush through each day as if on the fly
Never catch up however you try?
When the day is done do you lie in your bed
With the next 100 chores running through your head?

Have you ever told your child ‘We will do it tomorrow’
And in your haste, not seen her sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die
Because you never had the time to call and say hi?

When you are running so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day
It is like an unopened gift just thrown away.

Life is not a race …

It Couldn’t Be Done – Edgar Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it”;
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

Once upon a time …

An eastern monk was bogged down by troubles and worries from everywhere. Distressed, he called his wise men together and asked them to find a mantra which can help him sail through the tough times. The mantra should hold true in adversity and prosperity. If a man wished, he could live his life guided by the mantra.

He requested for the mantra to be so short that it could be inscribed on his ring – so that it remains in front of his eyes forever. The wise men put in a lot of thought and finally found the magical mantra which would remain true forever – no matter what happened. The mantra they gave him was – This, too, shall pass away.

This legend survived centuries and made a difference in lives of innumerable people. An American Editor, Paul Hamilton Hayne came across this legend and was taken over by it. He was so inspired by the story that he wrote some verses with the same message. For years people have carried with them a dog-eared, well worn out copy of the poem he wrote – ‘This, too, shall pass away’.
