Find out what experts are doing and do the same thing till you get the same results. People who do things better than you aren’t necessarily better than you. They just do things better/differently.</li>

<li><strong>3. Be Selective</strong><br />
Don’t work on whatever comes up. Choose what you are going to work on.</li>

<li><strong>4. Don’t Think; Just Do</strong><br />
Don’t spend too much time thinking about important tasks you don’t like. Letting the task be or ignoring it or staring it is not going to make the task any easier. Just get going. Begin the task and complete it without thinking much about it.</li>

As per the <a href="http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/397/80-20-rule-pareto-principle/">80-20 Rule</a>, 20% of tasks you do give you 80% of results. If you have 10 items to do, 2 items from that will be worth way more than the rest 8 items put together. What are those 2 items for you?</p>
<p>All 10 items from your list can take same amount of time. However, each item gives different results. The average person procrastinates on the 2 items &#8211; on the 20% which gives you most results. What activities are you focusing on?</p>
<p>Refuse to work on tasks which fall under the 80% until you are done working on the 20%</li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>10. Obey The Law of Forced Efficiency </strong><br />
<a href="http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/p274197058_The-law-of-forced-efficiency.html">The law of forced efficiency</a> says that “There is never enough time to do everything, but always enough time to do the most important thing.” Work on things that matter since no matter how much you do, you will always leave some tasks pending.</li>

<li><strong>11. Ask Yourself These Three Questions for Maximum Productivity </strong>
<ul>
<li>1. What are my highest value activities?</li>
<li>2. What can I and only I do that if done well will make a real difference?</li>
<li>3. What is the most valuable use of my time right now?</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>12. Procrastinate Creatively &#8230; Procrastinate On Purpose</strong><br />
There  is never going to be enough time for you to do everything on your list. Most people procrastinate unconsciously – by choosing to do certain things, they <a href="http://www.paulgraham.com/procrastination.html">procrastinate</a> the rest of things. Because of procrastinating without thinking, they procrastinate on their most important tasks – ones which could have a greater positive impact on their lives and careers. Instead, procrastinate knowingly, procrastinate deliberately on activities which produce low or negligible results.</li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>13. Say No</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.avani-mehta.com/2008/10/07/saying-no-and-feeling-good-about-it/">No</a> is the most powerful word in time management, the most important word in your vocabulary – need I say more?</li>

<li><strong>14. Use The ABCDE Method Continually</strong><br />
Assign a A,B,C,D or E to each task based on it’s importance. Prioritize tasks under each letter by setting a numerical sequence. Follow the Letter – Number combination. Never pick a B activity when A is yet undone. Never pick a C activity when B is yet to be done … so on and so forth.</p>

<li>A consists of all your frogs</li>
</li>
<li>B consists of all &#8216;should do&#8217; activities</li>
<li>C consists of &#8216;nice to get done&#8217; activities</li>
<li>D consists of tasks which should be delegated</li>
<li>E consists of tasks which should be eliminated </li>
</ul>

<li><strong>15. Focus On Your Key Result Areas</strong><br />
 Identify and determine those results that you absolutely, positively have to get to do your job well, and work on them all day long.</li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>16. Strengthen Your Weakest Link</strong><br />
Each job will have 5-7 key result areas. Your weakest key result area is the limit at which you can use all your skills and abilities (similar to the strength of a chain is in it’s weakest link). To get better results, strengthen your weak areas. </li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>17. Apply The Law Of Three</strong><br />
Write down your three most important goals in life right now in 30 seconds. Whether you are given 30 seconds or 30 minutes, the answer is usually the same. This is because when you are given only 30 seconds, your subconscious kicks in and gives you the answer you need quickly.</p>
<p>The Law Of Three can be applied anywhere in your life. Follow this exercise – write down answers to each of these questions in 30 seconds … be quick</p>
<ul>
<li>1. What are your three most important business or career goals right now?</li>
<li>2. What are your three most important family or relationship goals right now?</li>
<li>3. What are your three most important financial goals right now?</li>
<li>4. What are your three most important health goals right now?</li>
<li>5. What are your three most important personal and professional development goals right now?</li>
<li>6. What are your three most important social and community goals right now?</li>
<li>7. What are your three biggest problems or concerns in life right now?</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>18. Create A Work Friendly Environment </strong><br />
Prepare thoroughly before you begin: Have everything you need at hand before you start. Assemble all the papers, information, tools, work materials, and numbers you might require so that you can get started and keep going.</li>

<li><strong>19. How Do You Eat A Elephant? – One bite at a time. </strong><br />
How do you finish a huge project? One step at a time. You can complete any kind of project – no matter how overwhelming if you focus on completing just one step at a time.</li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>20. Become A Life Long Student</strong><br />
Feeling of inadequacy, lack of confidence leads to procrastination. Work on mastering your field, your core competencies to increase productivity. <a href="http://polaris.gseis.ucla.edu/pagre/leader.html">Lead your field</a>.</p>
<ul>Three Steps To Mastery</p>
<li>1. Read at least one hour</li>
<li>2. Upgrade your skills. Learn from experts, take seminars/courses/ workshops etc … anything which can keep you updated. Dedicate yourself to become one of the most knowledgeable and competent person in your field</li>
<li>3. Make most of your driving time. Listen to audio programs in your car.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>21. Eliminate Your Key Constraints </strong><br />
What is holding you back? Identify a single major constraint which is slowing you down or is the reason you procrastinate. Put all your energy into eliminating that constraint.</p>
<p>Apply the<a href="http://www.avani-mehta.com/2008/12/10/top-8-productivity-hacks-6/"> 80-20 rule</a> to constraints. 80% of constraints usually are internal – which means they are workable. Identify the top 20% of constraints amongst these and get set to remove them.</li>

Deadlines beat procrastination and get you going. Set imaginary deadlines if you must. And see how fast you eat your frogs.

<li><strong>24. Motivate Yourself &#8211; Be Your Personal Cheerleader</strong><br />
Psychologist Nathaniel Branden defines self esteem as &#8220;the reputation you have with yourself&#8221;. How you feel about yourself plays a central role in how you perform. Control your inner dialogue. Use positive affirmations. Don&#8217;t say/think things which make you doubt yourself or make you fearful.

<li><strong>25. Become A Optimist</strong><br />
Martin Seligman, author of Learned Optimism states that optimism is the most important quality you can develop for personal and professional success. Optimism can be learned through practice and repetition. Here are four special behaviors all optimists have -</p>

<li>1. Look for good in all situations</li>
<li>2. Seek valuable lesson in every set back or difficulty</li>
<li>3. Look for solution to every problem</li>
<li>4. Think and talk continually about your goals</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>26. Be Master Of Technology &#038; Not Slave</strong><br />
Technology if used unwisely can be a huge time waster. Don&#8217;t get addicted to technology. Detaching from technology from time to time can help you center and focus on things that matter.</p>
<p>Apply <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle">80-20 Rule</a> To Technology. Only 20% of all emails you get are important. Out of those 20%, only 20% need immediate response. The rest can be put aside for <a href="http://www.problogger.net/archives/2008/06/12/how-batch-processing-made-me-10-times-more-productive/">batch processing</a>.</li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>27. Create A Zone Of Silence</strong><br />
Create zones of silence during your day to day activities. Schedule for technology free hour in morning and noon. It will help you to center and relax your mind. It will help you to recharge your batteries.</p>
<p>You can take this further and schedule for technology free days as well.

<li><strong>28. Use The Slice And Dice Approach</strong><br />
There are two ways to use the slice and dice approach to work on huge projects -</p>
<ul>
<li>1. Work on one slice of project per day and then carry on with other activities.</li>
<li>2. Work for one slice of time (15 min, 30 mins, 1 hour &#8230; whatever time you decide) and then carry on with other activities.</li>
</ul>
<p>Over a period of time, you will be able to complete the project without experiencing a lot of resistance from your side.

<p></p>
<li><strong>29. Create Large Chunks Of Time</strong><br />
Identify when do you have large chunks of free time and assign it to important tasks. Plan the rest of tasks around this time. Schedule activities to ensure they get done.

<li><strong>30. Make Most of Gifts of Time</strong><br />
Flight time, waiting time etc are what author refers to as gifts of time. You get free, undisturbed time while flying or waiting. Plan in advance what work you can accomplish at times like this.
</li>
<p></p>
<li><strong>31. Complete What You Start</strong><br />
Once you start a task, don&#8217;t stop till you are 100% done. Work with single focus. When you have identified and are working on your most important task, doing anything else in between is a waste of time. Discipline yourself to work without distraction on the task in hand till it is 100% completed.</li>

<p>Imagine a treasure box which gives you something new &#038; valuable every time you visit it. That&#8217;s how Adam&#8217;s MasterMind Matrix Chart is. It&#8217;s now over a week that I have his chart. And yet, every time I visit it, I find something new which I hadn&#8217;t seen before. </p>
<p>What is this MasterMind Matrix Chart? It is a mind map which explores each and every aspect of human psychology and how it affects our life. Here are Adam&#8217;s words explaining what the MasterMind Matrix Chart is and how it got formed &#8211; </p>
<p><em>Every Personal Development Guru I came across had a personal vision of the human psyche, and they represented it in a variety &#8211; of somewhat limited &#8211; diagrams that only showed a single thread of the bigger picture. It was frustrating, because nobody I had come across, had managed to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together into a diagram that actually made sense to me, and provided me with the answers I was looking for.</p>
<p>While searching for the answers, I continuously questioned how every part of my psychology directly influenced aspects of my life. Some of the recurring questions I had on my mind were:</p>
<ul>
<li>How do my emotions interact with my beliefs, values and other building blocks of my personality?</li>
<li>What influence do other people have over the development of my personality?</li>
<li>How does my Brain interpret what I do? And how does it consequently influence my future decisions and actions?</li>
<li>How do each one of my choices and decisions influence all other aspects of my personality and life?</li>
<li>How do I know if I am on track moving towards fulfillment, or off-track moving towards disappointment?</li>
<li>And many others… </li>
</ul>
<p>These questions stimulated answers and further research, which eventually led to the development of the MasterMind Matrix Chart.</p>
<p></em>The chart is huge (you actually will have to see the chart to understand how huge:)) It is filled with information which took Adam over a decade to gather and put together. Because of it&#8217;s size, at first look, the chart does seem to be very complicated. However, once I got used to the chart and the way it shows information, it became easy to navigate through it and grasp everything. </p>
<p>If you are keenly interested in personal development, this chart can come in quite handy &#8211; since it maps out all aspects of self help and how they connect with each other. Best part is, anytime you now hear experts talk about a topic which you don&#8217;t know, you can quickly glance through this chart to get an idea of what they are talking about.</p>
<p>One thing to keep in mind is that the chart will not spoon feed you. While the chart does link all concepts and show how they work together, it is you who will have to find out how to use this information. This is purely a thinkers map. You have to do your own work to get something out of it.</p>

<p><i> Everyone has issues and concerns about anger. Some people need help in managing anger that gets out of control; others need help in accessing buried anger. Some take anger that is meant for one person out on innocent people, while others take their anger out on themselves. Instead of confronting the people with whom they are angry, they become self-destructive in some way—by overeating or binge eating, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol or taking drugs, or relentlessly bombarding themselves with self-criticism. The opening lines got my attention. For a change, I found a book which doesn&#8217;t focus on just one group of people &#8211; those who cannot control anger and are abusive. The book didn&#8217;t treat anger as a disease or the enemy. It doesn&#8217;t ask us to avoid anger or pressure us that it is bad to get angry and we all should become anger free. </p>
<p>What the book does instead is show us how to embrace anger. It provides with a step by step guide to discover our &#8216;anger style&#8217; and learn to use anger as a force for positive change.</p>
<p>The anger styles mentioned in the book are :</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Unhealthy Styles</strong> : Passive, Aggressive, Passive-Aggressive and Projective-Aggressive</li>

</strong>&#8216;. The opening lines piqued me and I wondered what tips is the author <strong>Frank Minirth </strong>going to provide to develop A Brilliant Mind.</p>
<p>Frank Minirth claims that increasing brain power is not dependant upon age, position or intelligence. He quotes example of Edison &#8211; who was dismissed from school because his teacher thought he did not have the intelligence to succeed academically and Winston Churchill &#8211; the greatest orator of all time &#8211; who used to be last in his class. Both, increased their brain power using one simple and powerful technique &#8211; being voracious readers and increasing their vocabulary.</p>
<p>I actually couldn&#8217;t believe that by simply increasing my vocabulary I can have a brilliant mind or increased IQ. But I was sold to the idea of increasing vocabulary after reading the following : </p>
<p><em>The logic, I reasoned was simple: we think in words; words are the tools of thoughts. With words we express our beliefs. With words we encourage others to act upon our beliefs. Others judge us by how we use words. The right word allows us to connect with others. Words are our showcase to the world. With words we create the perception we want to present.</em></p>
<p>I did wonder how does memorizing words and increased brain power connect. The connection  was in Neuroplasticity. <em>Neuroplasticity means that brain can develop new cells. It can change and develop new connections between its nerve cells</em>. It has been proven that memory exercises cause Neuroplasticity. You can increase number of cell connections in the brain by memorizing words. The more words you memorize, the more you can memorize because of the increase in cells and cell connections.</p>
<p>Of course it is possible to develop brain by simply memorizing things other than words. But increased vocabulary has its own benefits of being able to communicate better, score well in tests etc. Hence, the idea of increasing brain power by memorizing words gets a thumbs up from me.</p>
<p>The rest of <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0800731875?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=avanimehta-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0800731875">A Brilliant Mind</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=avanimehta-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0800731875" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></strong> is made up of memorizing techniques and pages and pages of words to memorize. There are chapters on parts-of-speech words, relationship words, prefixes, suffixes, roots, specialized words and so on. I plan to start with 20 words at a time as suggested by Frank Minirth. What are you going to do?</p>

It doesn&#8217;t matter what the problem is, chances are high that using these techniques effectively we will find a solution which works for us.</p>
<p><strong>A short summary of &#8216;Do One Thing Different&#8217;</strong>:<br />
<em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t apply the same solution repeatedly and frustrate over not getting results. Same actions produce same results. Try something new. Most common approach to problem solving is answering the &#8216;why&#8217; and finding some solution. Traditionally we look in the past, childhood experiences, behaviour, personality type, nature, external elements etc contributing to problem to find answer to our question &#8216;why does the problem occur&#8217;. Instead, Take a full 360 degree view of your problem. Who, when, where, what, how, why &#8211; find detailed answers to all of these &#8211; as if you have to teach someone to act out your problem. And tweak single/multiple aspect(s) to find a solution that works for you.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>While my notes seem to be never ending on different problem solving approaches I learnt from this book. Here are my <strong>Top 20 Learnings from Do One Thing Different</strong>:</p>
<p>1. Find out what you usually do when in problem and change your doing.</p>
<p>2. Find actions leading you to the problem and break the action series. Add some to the action series which will be good for you, which you would hate doing or takes time to do.</p>
<p>3. Focus on times you thought the problem would occur but it didn&#8217;t. Find the action which resulted in problem not occurring and intentionally repeat whatever action worked.</p>
<p>4. Find out how do you come out of your problems. And apply what you find earlier to speed up the process of coming out of the problem.</p>
<p>5. Find out some solution style you have successfully used in other problem/life areas. Take inspiration and apply solution in the same lines here.</p>
<p>6. Ask yourself, why isn&#8217;t the problem worse. What are you doing to not allow problem to grow beyond a certain level. Reduce your level. And apply same solution to not to allow problem to grow beyond the new level.</p>
<p>7. Think/Act working towards a future you want. Don&#8217;t let your past or present come in it&#8217;s way.</p>
<p>8. Question every assumption, every story you have made for yourself and others. Questions all rules and limitations you have set.</p>
<p>9. Find out which sense do you predominantly use when the problem occurs. Switch it with some other sense.</p>
<p>10. Find new things about the problem. Sometimes the key to solving them is hidden from us.</p>
<p>11. Take action. Participate in the world.</p>
<p>12. Ask questions which can lead you to answers.</p>
<p>13. Talk about your problems as if they are in past.</p>
<p>14. Put problems in right perspective. &#8220;You&#8221; are not a problem. There is a problem in your life.</p>
<p>15. Create a bigger problem to work on. Small problems will automatically seem like a challenge or no problem at all.</p>
<p>16. Take responsibility for your problem. Blaming someone/something else will make you lose power you have over the problem.</p>
<p>17. Find experiences/examples (from your life) which negate the problem.</p>
<p>18. Recognise your potential. You are not limited to who you believe you are.</p>
<p>19. Never say never</p>
<p>20. Use different combinations from the problem solving techniques you learnt. And give them time to show results.</p>

<p>Ofcourse you all know this quote. But ever wondered doing things differently means exactly what? How to put to practice what we understand from this quote? <strong>&#8220;Do One Thing Different&#8221; by Bill O&#8217;Hanlon</strong> is about that. It shows multiple ways to creatively find solutions to life&#8217;s persistent problems. Solutions which are uncommonly sensible and hence rare.</p>
<p>I am currently reading this book and enjoying it. Here is the basic introduction to it:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most recurring question in the book &#8216;The Dream Manager&#8217; by Matthew Kelly is &#8220;What is your dream?&#8221;. Readers take this question along with them even after they keep the book down.</p>
<p>The book starts by taking on the problem of high rate of employee turnover, their disengagement from work and how it impacts business. Two people, Simon and Greg, set out to find an actual solution to this problem and not a quick fix. They realise that increasing salary, giving promotion, etc are not real solutions. For what motivates, differs from person to person.</p>
<p>In their quest to find out what employees really want and how to keep them motivated, they learn two very important things :<br />
* Never assume what employees want. Ask them. Chances are high that they will come up with things that you would not have thought of.<br />
* Treat people like people and they will act like one &#8211; take interest in your employees&#8217; life and growth, show that you care and appreciate them and they will reciprocate.</p>
<p>They realised that what drives humans is dreams. What ignites passion in them and make their lives worthy is their dreams. If someway the employees can think of their job as a way to make progress in life and fulfil their dreams, the employees are bound to stay motivated and dedicated.</p>
<p>To find out what kind of dreams their employees have, they conducted a survey. The replies were varied and totally unexpected. Dreams were as simple as having a good Christmas, learning a language to big ones like owning a house. That&#8217;s when they decided to introduce a Dream Manager. Since most dreams have a financial component, they found someone from finance background with a keen interest in making a difference in lives of people as their dream manager.</p>
<p>The roles of a dream manager are as following:<br />
* Ask employees about their dreams<br />
* Listen without judgement<br />
* Help employees articulate their dreams<br />
* Help employees in creating a plan for their dreams<br />
* Follow up<br />
* If there is something that can be done to help, do that.</p>
<p>Any employee who is interested, gets to meet the dream manager on a monthly basis to assess his/her progress and discuss new plans.</p>
<p>As expected, this initiative was met with resistance by some and welcomed by some. For all employees to believe that this dream manager was for real and it worked, a lot of convincing would be required. And who would be a better person to market this than someone who&#8217;s dream has come true. In the months to come, they ensured that some big dreams get realised. Like helping a employee with owning a house. As employees started realising dreams, they started sharing excitedly about it and the message about success of the dream manager spread like wild fire.</p>
<p>Usually employees started with smaller, simpler dreams which they knew if they worked on can be realised. As dreams started coming true, employees started picking up on bigger dreams as if, with each dream getting realised, their belief in themselves and their dreams increased.</p>
<p>Some of course were found to have stopped dreaming altogether about what they want. In day to day existence and struggle for survival some stopped dreaming and did not even realise it. However, with time, it changed.</p>
<p>The book then goes on citing examples of varied ways in which the dream manager helps employees with their dreams, and how that affects employees, their family, work and organization.</p>
<p>The rate of employee turnover drastically reduced, people took lesser sick leaves, came to office on time and worked productively and happily. The most important of all, employees and clients stayed loyal to the company. Business boomed, profits increased. The annual numbers in terms of revenue, costs and employee turnover were astonishing.</p>
<p>As much benefit Simon and Greg saw at organisational level, they saw at personal level as well. They realised that every relationship is in existence so that one party can help the other to progress in their dreams. Which in effect means that each of us is a dream manager in lives of people around us. For every one dreams and needs some kind of dream manager to keep them on the path of realising dreams. People need someone to ask them about their dreams, listen to their dreams, help them put dreams in words, help them in planning and most importantly hold them into account.</p>
