Do What Cannot Be Done - Nothing Is Impossible

It Couldn’t Be Done – Edgar Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it”;
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

    I have a blind friend who wants to go sky-diving. I’m thinking, why not?

      J.D., that’s the part I love about this poem too. He didn’t care what others thought. He wanted to find out for himself.

    Everything is possible….
    All it needs is a right approach in the expedient direction with the vision of you being sure that it can be achieved……

    I love it, very motivating.

    Everyone always has an opinion about what can and can’t be done. Most people are very conservative and not willing to try something that is outside the normal human experience.

    Thanks for sharing this!

      Kaizan, that’s true, usually people define what can or cannot be done by their experiences – which are limited.

    Yep, with a bit of a grin — ALL shall be accomplished. For a grin is a positive attitude.

    I’ve never seen the failure / assail you rhyme before. Quite clever.

      Jannie, I love grins. Especially half grins … they look very naughty, very kiddish. This rhyme is new for me too.

    I love the photo as much as the poem and the title rocks! Too often we try to be like someone else weather it’s our blog our career, children or art. I crave originality.

      Tess, am happy that you liked the photo, title and the poem. Being ourselves should be the easiest thing in the world. Surprisingly, it’s not.

    Since you write so optimistically, can we get something about patriotism and engineering?
    Actually I need some ideas for engineering day celebration to tell our juniors about the brain drain situation and why we should stay in India after engineering so as to improve the quality of life in India itself instead of finding pleasures in other countries….
    The fact is everything I think of, actually comes against this idea…..

      Slim0123, I guess you haven’t heard about the ‘reverse brain drain’. Search for that term, you should find relevant material.

    “I cannot be done” is the most diabolical mindset of most human beings. :-)

    @Slim0123, @Avani

    Great thoughts. Its not about “finding pleasures in other countries….”

    Its about freedom, liberation, absence of bureaucracy, absence of “educated illiterates”……developing a panoramic vision of life and contributing to the society.

    Everything is possible….. but the gravitational force is to high here ;)

    your thoughts Avani…?…..lets all be a little honest and realist here

      In-realist, to each … his own. Some find the pull in their own nations strong, some find pull to developed countries strong. I don’t think there are any right answers. People should be free to do whatever works best for them.

    Very true. Impossibility is a state of mind. Look at john Reese for example he made 1 millions dollars in a day. Are you serious?I believe anything is possible. Another example is roger banisters 4 minute mile. Great post.
    Impossibility is truly something we can change by thinking we can have it or do it, instead of can’t.

      Jonathan, Roger Banisters 4 minute mile made the same possible for so many other people. Immediately after he broke the record and people knew this is possible, a lot of them achieved the impossible as well. Truly inspiring.
