When some great sorrow, like a mighty river,
Flows through your life with peace-destroying power
And dearest things are swept from sight forever,
Say to your heart each trying hour:
“This, too, shall pass away.” (Read full poem)

Life Hack #8 : This, too, shall pass away … (Self)

Once upon a time …

An eastern monk was bogged down by troubles and worries from everywhere. Distressed, he called his wise men together and asked them to find a mantra which can help him sail through the tough times. The mantra should hold true in adversity and prosperity. If a man wished, he could live his life guided by the mantra.

He requested for the mantra to be so short that it could be inscribed on his ring – so that it remains in front of his eyes forever. The wise men put in a lot of thought and finally found the magical mantra which would remain true forever – no matter what happened. The mantra they gave him was – This, too, shall pass away.

This legend survived centuries and made a difference in lives of innumerable people. An American Editor, Paul Hamilton Hayne came across this legend and was taken over by it. He was so inspired by the story that he wrote some verses with the same message. For years people have carried with them a dog-eared, well worn out copy of the poem he wrote – ‘This, too, shall pass away’.

This, Too, Shall Pass Away

Art thou in misery, brother? Then I pray

Be comforted. Thy grief shall pass away.

Art thou elated? Ah, be not too gay;

Temper thy joy, this, too, shall pass away.

Art thou in danger? Still let reason sway,

And cling to hope: this, too, shall pass away.

Tempted art thou? In all thine anguish lay

One truth to heart: this, too, shall pass away.

Do rays of loftier glory round these play?

King-like art thou? This, too, shall pass away!

Wherever thou art, wherever thy footsteps stray,

Heed these words: This too shall pass away!

    Great post Avani.

It echoes the point that time heals all wounds.

It also reminds us that life is a series of fleeting moments.

For a life frame, I use mind, body, career, emotions, financial, relationships and fun. I think of them as my portfolio of “hot spots” and I invest in them, spreading my life force across the buckets. I find the buckets support each other and sometimes I find they are always in flux, either climbing or sliding, but never static.

Hi Avani: I had heard of this quote by Abraham Lincoln:

‘And this, too, shall pass away.’ How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!”

I had never heard of the poem you have above, it’s beautiful.

    Great Post Avani,

I don’t know when I first heard this quote, only in Spanish, but it is one that has helped me immensely for many, many years.

I too, would like to have been a monk but the calling of wife and mother pulled me deeper.

However, that “all too shall pass away” is certainly something I can remember from day to day and apply to life.

Greetings of 2009. May it be good to you and you to it.

Avani, my mom used to share the words ‘This too shall pass.’ growing up and I clung to them dearly as comfort in the mist of trials and suffering and for such a small phrase it offers so much hope, doesn’t it?! :) I sometimes shared with my friends also! There is much power in these words :) thank you for the reminder! ~hugs, Jen/Sharmila

all things are possible through Christ who strengthens me.
But in the end He will ask, or say
did you feed me or clothe me when i needed it . or he will say
well done thou good and faithful servant.
