People Rarely Succeed Unless They Have Fun In What They Are Doing – Dale Carnegie

‘People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily. – Zig Ziglar’ Top 8 Motivation Hacks will help you to get motivated and stay motivated. A daily dose of either of these will enable you to stay on track with your goals and achieve them.

Motivation Hack #7 : Add A Dash Of Fun & Humour

Do you find that no matter what you do, some tasks are always not up to your liking; and you can’t escape them either? It could be documenting, budgeting, dieting, exercising, organizing, generating reports, updating skills … it could be anything.

Your best bet in these kind of scenarios is to find some way to add fun to the task.

  • Have A Buddy – Number Buddy & Work Buddy

Numbers can become your best friends. Compete with yourself, or against others – try to do things faster and better. Create a scoreboard to chart your progress. Map your learning curve or progress curve. Try to gets things right in least number of attempts. Think of some way to relate your activity with numbers so that the game becomes on how to improve them rather than how to do the task well.

A buddy can do wonders to any kind of task as well – no matter how boring or painful they seem. When you have someone to share the journey with, through conversations, jokes and even silence, things start seeming better and easier. Moreover, a buddy will hold you into account and push you to get things done.

  • Do Something You Enjoy Side By Side

This one is my favorite – when you can’t find enjoyment in the task, do something enjoyable side by side. I listen to music along with almost every activity – be it work, exercise, studies … makes all of them pretty much fun. Of course, one thing to take care of is that whatever activity you pick up, does not affect your task in hand.

If you can’t find something enjoyable to go along with the task, pick an activity which you can treat yourself with after you finish your task. Your treat has to be something for which you will want to work hard. I usually make motivation stronger by creating a rule that the only way to get my treat is to do the task; if I miss the task, I miss the treat – there are absolutely no work-arounds.

  • Quit Complaining, Use Humour

Have you ever noticed, that cribbing drains you completely and fills you with negativity? Infact, if you have someone around you who complains a lot, then too the negativity starts affecting you. Hence, don’t ever, ever, ever complain. The more you complain, the worse your dreaded task will seem. The lesser you crib, the better for you. Even better is to cut anyone who complains around you (of course in a way that you don’t create more problems than solve) and not allow them to crib any more.

The best antidote to complaining – use humour. Remember those school and college days when silly jokes took you past boring lectures and subjects? Use the same sense of humour to get past your task in hand. Of course, unless you accept things the way they are, you will not be able to see the light side of things. So accept, don’t complain and make fun of whatever you have to do to sail through the tasks.

Do you add a dash of fun and humour to stay motivated? How do you do so?

I think mindset makes a huge difference. Making a game of it really helps. I like to combine timeboxes and then race against the timebox to test my capacity. It’s a great way to improve and find better techniques.

Hi Avani: I completely agree that we’re more productivity and more highly motivated if we use humor and have fun. And like you say, if you absolutely have to complete a task you dislike, make sure you have a reward waiting for you when you’re done :-)

Hi Avani… I haven’t heard the term ‘crib’ or ‘cribbing’ before, but I get the gist of what you’re saying (must be a culture thing as I’m Australian!)

Reminds me of a recent challenge where you have to eliminate all complaining from your vocabulary for a certain length of time – can work wonders….

    Good post!
