“What Lies Behind Us And What Lies Ahead Of Us Are Tiny Matters Compared To What Lies Within Us.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes

In response to Unlock Your Mind - A Story From Houdini’s Life, Nivas of Life of Excellence mailed me an empowering story. Thank you Nivas, for sharing the story and allowing me to share it with all of you.

There’s an old Hindu story about where god hid the secret to mankind’s greatest gift - a super power. It goes something like this …

There was a time when a huge imbalance in power had been created - between god, asura (enemy of god) and mankind. God feared that due to rapid growth in mankind, they may overtake them and gain the super power. Lord Bramha assembled the minor gods to discuss where should they hide the super power so that man wouldn’t find it.

“What about in the earth?” they said. “No,” said the Brahma, “they’ll dig it up.”
“What about the ocean depths?” they suggested. “Or the jungles. Or the mountains. Or the skies.”
“No,” said Brahma. “Sooner or later man will explore every region of the world and the universe.”

After much discussion, the gods turned to Brahma in despair. Brahma then decided and said. “This is what we’ll do. We’ll put it in the one place man will never think of looking.” Everyone agreed to the idea and hid the super power. Ages have gone by since then and Bramha is still found to be right. Man is still searching for the super power everywhere except that place …

The place where God hid that super power is “Within Man Himself”.

Do you have an empowering quote, story or poem to share; one which speaks about the power within each of us ? I would love to hear from you.

That is a beautiful story, I figured out the answer at “the one place man will never think of looking” powerful but true and we are all guilty of missing the greatest gift we have to been given.

My quote reminds me that I am in charge and I can do with my life whatever I please:

I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.
    -Louisa May Alcott

In life, you can learn to sail your ship and control your destiny, or you can choose live in ignorance and choose not to learn how to sail your ship (you end up spending your life going around in a small circle, never getting anywhere) or in some cases, you can choose to let someone else sail your ship (this inevitably leads to the worst kind of regret)

There is nothing more empowering than taking control of your life, just do it, the tools are available and thanks to libraries and the internet it is somewhat free…

    Thanks,

Wow that story sends such a strong message. I think a lot of people could do a little soul searching to find their own power.

My favourite poem is one that reminds us about not stifling the creativity of children. It is too long to post here, and it has different titles, but you can do a search on ‘And he began to make a red flower with a green stem’. It goes along with your story, in that I believe children are born innately aware of their super powers. Sadly, it is life experiences that drive that power deep into hiding. Not that my childhood was awful at all, but it took me 10 years of concentrated effort to raise my powers back up into the open. And boy, does that ever feel wonderful!

Thanks for sharing this great story Avani. It is true that we can go about doing things, looking for answers, and we tend to look outward. When we should start inward first. I love it, and the quote you have to go with this story.

I’ve read this story before Avani but I’m glad to see it here because it’s just so beautiful. It’s similar to going on a long journey and discovering when you get back home that what you were looking for was right there all along.

I liked this story. It tells me of the wisdom of not being able to use ultimate power until we have the discipline, wisdom, and ability, to know ourselves from mature inner work, contemplation, and meditation.

It is the way of the universe.

    Thank you for this,

    John

Hmmm, the story itself strikes me as a bit corny (no disrespect to Hindu tradition — I’d call some of Japanese folk tales corny, too!) but what’s interesting to me is that even back then, people knew that there was hidden potential, the power that a lot of us aren’t tapping into, between us.

One time one of my teachers told me that every 500 years or so humanity goes through scientific revolution and it turns everything you know upside down. On the other hand, religious principles have stayed more or less the same for thousands of years.

My point is — we probably know a lot that science can’t figure out. We knew it before the current world view even came about.

Great story! I can most certainly relate to it. I’ve been searching externally all my life, not realising that wisdom and power comes from within.

    Hi Avani,

I love that last line, “The place where God hid that super power is “Within Man Himself”.

It’s sad that we go searching outside ourselves to find something that’s right under our nose.

Thanks for the story, Avani and Nivas - I quite like it and I’ve not heard it before.

I have lots of favourite quotes, this is one I was thinking about this week but I don’t know who to credit: “The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.”

We all have so much potential that God gave us at conception. Very few find it. Very few have parents or anyone else in their lives who help them bring it out. Fortunate are those who do! For the rest of us it is a long journey trying to figure everything out.

I still love Paul J. Meyer’s story of how his mother told him at the age of 12 or so that on a scale of 1-10 he was a 10 and that would never change. She was telling him in essence it was all there within him.
